This book did not disappoint! It is a great complement to the movie, offers more details of course, but is still easy to follow. The technical verbiage, which is extensive, is not a detriment to the readers understanding, even for a layperson like myself. I only looked up one thing while reading this book (more info on gimbal lock and why that is such a bad thing). Mr. Lovell's personal account of the Apollo 13 disaster makes you feel like you are living it right along with him, which fortunately we are not! Even after watching the movie over and over and knowing it almost line for line, I felt like this book brought forward new details and perspectives that made me feel like I was learning about the Apollo 13 disaster for the first time.This book is an incredible story about science, space, and human perseverance. It is one of my favorite books of all time and one that I will re-read for years to come. I highly, highly recommend this book! Written by astronaut Jim Lovell and co-writer Jeffrey Kluger, Apollo 13 follows the harrowing trip that was supposed to result in a moon landing and return. I have seen the movie many times and wanted to see how faithful it was to the actual voyage. I'm happy to say that it is fairly true to what actually happened with a few minor exceptions. First, the movie portrays Haise as becoming ill almost from the time of lift-off but it was a few days into the journey before he started showing symptoms. Second, the movie portrays Ken Mattingly as being very integral in determining the procedures for powering up the command module for re-entry.. While the book does mention that he helped, it does not indicate his involvement was as involved as does the movie. I suspect the movie took liberty here to provide the very excellent actor Gary Sinise with a bigger role in a film that reunited him with Tom Hanks. The movie also shows Mattingly as being the one in communication with the crew during descent and re-entry, when it was actually a ground crew member. Beyond those items, the movie was quite faithful to the story and perhaps for a lay person, makes the whole journey more understandable. By its very nature, the book is extremely technical, using terms and abbreviations that I simply got lost trying to follow. Showing Swigert's "NO" note taped over one cockpit control lever helped the lay person to realize how important it was that the astronauts have their wits about them at all times.If you liked the movie, or enjoy reading about the space program, this book is excellent and authentic. I didn't give it the fifth star due to the technical terms I couldn't understand.
